A Man Walks Into A Bar… He Say’s “Ow”: A Writing Prompt

I am a fan of dad jokes & irreverent humor.

Daily writing prompt
What makes you laugh?

I think that is the best way to describe my humor. I was that little kid who sat on her dad’s lap while he told people the jokes he heard over the CB while working. He was a truck driver.

The man had the best, irreverent, and sexual jokes possible. He would start with some silly dad jokes, then toss out something that would make you say, “Really, man? Really?!”

Example:

I was in middle school when I told my best friend the joke, “Why couldn’t Miss Piggy count to 100? When she gets to 69, she gets a frog in her throat.”

I was then given the pleasure of being the one who told my friend what 69 was. Her mom was ticked off at me for that!

I wasn’t a teenager yet, but I had good ears and found myself to be quite perceptive. I figured stuff out quite easily.

I have a blog so I can be a little inappropriate, unabashedly so!

When you’re openly representing a brand, any brand, there comes an expectation that you’re fully politically correct. No showing of extreme emotion. No telling or laughing at stupid jokes that are deemed “inappropriate” by public opinion.

I’ve mentioned this before, but I laugh at stereotype humor because I firmly believe it is okay to find the ridiculous to be funny. I believe those who find it insulting, well, they’re likely the problem.

Ridiculous is exactly that. Being butt-hurt over it likely means there is something that feels true in it.

Whether it is a personal offense, a trait you don’t like about yourself, or your dislike of politically incorrect beliefs that you hold.

I am guilty of feeling butt-hurt over irreverent mental health humor. I happen to have some things in my past, and it triggers that sensation of regret & a truth I am afraid of.

Guess what?

I am also able to step outside of that moment and recognize that it is still a joke about something ridiculously stereotypical. They’re meant to be ridiculous.

I’ll be one of the first people to make fat jokes. I use humor to deflect when things are hurting inside me. I know when to just laugh, and I know my inability to laugh at something isn’t usually about the person or the joke. It is because something inside me related to and didn’t like what I saw in myself.

It is also okay to admit when you don’t like a specific form of humor and not listen to it.

Personal choice is an amazing thing. Unless you’re held at gunpoint, you have the option to not listen.

I also laugh like crazy at the dumbest dad jokes. My boyfriend will tell me, “Ugh, that’s a groaner!” Yet, I’ll be laughing my butt off. Stupid jokes are so stupid that I cannot help but laugh!

That is what makes dad jokes what they are!

Minnesota

If New York has the big apple, why is Minnesota known for small apples?
That is where you can find Minneapolis.

Scratch art logo for the website that says "Angela J Shupe, The Blog" with "I'm Probably Overthinking This..." written in the middle.

I was bored, so I made a little scratch art logo for the blog. I’ll end up doing something ornate at some point. However, I thought this was a little fun & fit my personality.

It is also how I thought I would finish off this post.

Just a little up close look at what is already in the upper left corner of my website.

A lovely individual I know from my charity work forwarded a call for disabled female artists by The Toledo Museum of Art & another charitable organization. They are looking for submissions around my area to hang in the museum from the end of June to the end of July.

It is a big deal for exposure. I don’t think any of my art is of the proper quality to hang in a museum. No matter the medium. However, can it really hurt to do something just for the submission and try?

I think it would be good for me to try.

Either way, have a beautiful Sunday, my friends. I hope this finds you doing good and, well, made you smile a little.

A heart with a line and the signature "Angela J Shupe."

I was thinking…
