Logo for Angela J Shupe "Blogger & Peer Supporter" a website dedicated to highlighting the author's overall bio & achievements at angelashupe.info

That is the logo for my linktree-style website that I am trying to build. It brings together all of the branches of who I am into one location.

  • Advocacy
  • About Me
  • Accreditations
  • Etc…

Why do I highlight this? Well, the logo, of course.

The logo image I chose for my information page highlights what I want to talk about right now.

Emotions.

Emotions Are Not Linear

We don’t live life in one preset. To be honest, if we only ever saw one emotion at all times…

… I may start to question our stability more than those with a natural variance.

I have been depressed and screamed into the void, “Why can’t I be happy?! I just want to be happy!”

Then, I had to consider that it takes sadness to appreciate and understand happiness. If we lived in a single emotion forever, we’d never truly appreciate that feeling.

Then, I have to wonder if it is really happiness if it is the only feeling we know. Because, if we don’t know otherwise, wouldn’t it resemble simple contentment instead? A static feeling of being?

My emotions enjoy a good ol’ flip-flop more than time-to-time. Something can bring on sadness just as easily as I can find something worthy of joy a moment later.

I am also aware that PMDD can intensify those shifts greatly.

PMDD aside…

Emotions Are Not Singular

Oh, those pesky emotions can sometimes double dip.

Trust me, it is nowhere near as delicious as a double-dipped ice cream cone.

You might know exactly what I mean without realizing it, too. Think of a moment when something really hurt your feelings.

You felt sad, right? But what happened after…

Is the answer that you got mad? Well, now you understand that double-dipped cone of emotion.

So, now we’re experiencing the concept of fluctuating emotion with the idea that sometimes they can layer on top of each other.

This increases the absolute complexity of our emotions tenfold.

So… Why Do I Bring This Up?

There was a time I had to learn how to understand what I was feeling. It is not weird to lack an understanding of an emotion. The trick is learning how to identify them, recognize when a deeper emotion lies under the surface emotion, and process them.

Mind you, I said process and not manage. Emotions are natural. The real trick is the processing. That ability to handle them as your mind and body will allow. A healthy tactic that allows you to move forward.

I guess I am trying to say that I am struggling with that today. I’m feeling deeply. Different emotions are hitting me. Pinpointing the core feeling so I can move beyond it is not computing properly.

My emotional regulation is a little off kilter.

Is your emotional regulation a little off, too? Well, I want you to know it is okay. Surprisingly enough…

…No one is perfect. You’re allowed to have moments where you’re down.

At the end of the day, those good moments will feel just a little sweeter.
